FORMATIVE
A formative assessment is a tool for teachers to gather evidence of students learning to help guide the instructional strategies needed to encourage higher achievement.

SUMMATIVE
A summative assessment is a test at the end of a unit to see if the students mastered the materials or if the teacher successfully taught the materials.
EXAMPLES: Unit Assessments, STARR Test, MAP Testing

INTERIM/BENCHMARK
A benchmark is a way to see what the students understand over a longer period of time and is usually a test based on the grade level expectations.
EXAMPLES: Chapter Tests, Standardized Tests, STARR
DIAGNOSTIC
A diagnostic test is a great way to get an idea of what the students know and what they still need to learn about an upcoming unit.
EXAMPLES: Pre-Test, Morning Work
PERFORMANCE
A performance assessment is a way to get the students involved in their learning by having them perform their understand instead of picking answers from a piece of paper.
EXAMPLES: Projects, Task Cards, Journal Entries
