networks and their effects
Modems
demodulator
to enable the computer to process the data
modulator
a computer s digital signal into an analouge for transmission over an existing telephone line.
means= Modulator and Demodulator
DIAL UP MODEMS operate at transmission speed of about 60 kilobits per second which is very slow in todays standard.
MODERN BROADBAND or ADSL [aymmetric digital subscriber line ]modems operate at up tp 100 megabits per second when using fibre-optic cables.the term 'asymmetric' actually means that the modem is faster at downloading data that it is at uploading data.
HUBS
hubs are hardware device that can have a number of device or computer connected to them.
Hardware device
They are often used to connect another device to form a LAN.For example,a star network.
Its main task is to take any data packet received at one of its ports and broadcast it to every computer in the network.
using Hub is not very secure.
Switches
They are simillar like Hubs but more efficient in a way that they can distribute data packets,
It is very much more secure,
each device or a computer on a network has a media access control [MAC] address that uniquely indefies it.
The switch check the data packet received and works out in its destination address ans send the data to the appropriate computer only.
Data packet sent switches to MAC address to indentify the source of the data.
Router
it enables data packets to be routed between the different networks, for example,to join a LAN to a wide area network [WAN]
Routers inspect the data packets and sent to it from any computer and on any of the network connected to it.
since every computer on the same network has the same parts of an internet protocol address.
Bridge
it is to connect LAN to another LAN that uses the same protocol.
used to connect different parts of LAN so they can function as a single LAN.
They tend to use to interconnected LANs since sending out every data packet to all possible destination would quickly flood large network with unnecessary traffic.
