Networks and the effects of using them
In this chapter you will learn about
network devices such as routers, hubs and switches
networks
IP and MAC addresses
WIFI and bluetooth
how to set up and configure a small network
intranets and extranets
LAN,WAN and WLAN
network security (e.g. policing)
accessing the internet
authentication
viruses
data protection acts
faxes and emails
video, audio and wed conferencing
Modems
modem means modulator demodulator its a device which converts a computer's digital signal into an analogue signal for transmission over an exsisting telephone line.
Hubs
Hubs are hardware devices that can have a number of devices or computer connected to them. They are usually connect together a number of devices to form a Lan.
Switches
switches are almost like hubs but are much more efficient in the way that they distribute data packets as with hubs, they connect a number of devices or computers together they become a LAN
Bridge
Bridges are devices that connect to one LAN to another LAN that uses the same protocol. They are often connect together different parts of a LAN so that they can function as a single LAN
Router
Routers enable data packets to be routed between the different networks, for example to join a LAN to a wide area network
Other Hardware
Gateway
Network interface card (NIC)
Network cables
How computers use WI-FI and Bluetooth
Wi-Fi a wireless transmitter receives information from a network via its connection
Bluetooth sends ad receives radio waves i a band of 79 different frequencies. These are all centered on a 2.45 Ghz frequency
