Assessments
Summative
Definition: a type of assessment that is to evaluate student learning at the end of a lesson or unit. These are usually high stakes which means that they have a high point value.
Examples: midterm exam, final project, paper, an end of unit test
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: intended to be something between formative and summative assessments. They are fixed assessments that evaluate students against specific grade-level standards and learning goals rather than simply taking a pulse of understanding. Unlike summative assessments, the purpose is not to determine mastery, but to identify students' academic strengths and weaknesses and use that information to guide future lessons.
Examples: standardized tests (school, state or district level), STAAR, MAP
Diagnostic
Definition: a pretest. Usually serves as a barometer for how much pre-loaded information a student has about the topic. Used to help show what background knowledge students have about an upcoming topic. This helps inform the teacher's lesson planning and identifies areas that may need more or less time spent on.
Examples: survey, KWL chart, journal entry, writing prompts over the topic, pre-tests
Performance
Definition: a performance-based assessment measures students' ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit. Usually the task challenges students to use their higher order thinking skills to create a product or complete a task.
Examples: presentations, portfolios, performances, projects (both individual and group), fairs (such as a science fair), debates.
-
Formative
Definition: a type of assessment that is to monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback that the instructor can use to improve their teaching and have students improve their learning throughout the lesson or unit.
Examples: exit ticket, class poll, quizzes, discussion
