S204 Sociology Lesson 5: The adult Effect
YOUTH
Youth were/are encouraged to participate in sports for the following reasons:
Provide opportunities to control the social environment of children in developed societies.
Encourage children to be productive adults through "fun" activities, where they are able to learn adult values, acquire specific sporting skills and leadership virtues.
Play is an essential activity for children to develop their social & physical capabilities (Plato & Socrates)
Keep them off the streets & out of trouble
Relation to perspective of sport
Functionalist
Supports the original & modern purposes of youth involvement in sport with adult supervision to achieve the intended objectives
Conflict
Suspicious of the commercial aspect of youth involvement in sport
Eg:
sponsorship, privatisation of leagues and endorsement
Interactionist
Supports the notion that athletes should be involved in the running and management of the sporting teams/ organisations that they may be part of.

Increased involvement in youth sport by commercial entities
High adult intervention
Aggression & Violence
Advantage
: Agression & Violence: No advantages
Disadvantages
: It may see more youths getting hurt. Youths may be dropping out of sport, or pervasive incidents of violence may be deemed acceptable
Commercialisation of the youth sport process
Advantage
: It may mean that youths have to fork out less for their equipment. Eg:
as it would be sponsored
Disadvantage
: It is ethical to exploit youths as walking advertisements for corporations & their interest?
Need for Standards / Measurements
Advantage
: It is seen as a means to provide youth sport participants fairness in the competition
Disadvantage
: Is there a need to standardise everything? Eg:
How does one standardise a gunny sack for a sack race?
Deviant Practices
Advantage
: No Advantage
Disadvantage
: Practices like cheating bullying & doping to be part of the youth sporting norm.
Performance Orientation
Advantage
: Performance orientation optimises opportunities for talented individuals to be developed
Disadvantage
: May cause youths to no longer have fun and drop out from sport altogether
Focus on competition, acquisition of skill and leadership
Structured/ Organised
How can fun be retained in youth sport?
Ensure that youths are given an opportunity to have fun sessions, interspersed with serious training
Ensuring that league guidelines to minimise adult intervention are adhered to. Eg:
League bars Parent spectator
Making participation key. Eg:
Nuori Suomi Principles
Teaching life lessons & values of good sportsmanship through sport. Eg:
Positive Coaching Alliance
