What are Social Institutions / Socializing Agents?
From a sociologist's standpoint:
A social institution is a complex, integrated set of social norms organized around the preservation of a basic societal value.
From a layperson's standpoint:
Lay persons are likely to use the term "Institution" very loosely, for churches, hospitals, jails & many other things as institutions.
A social institution "denotes an aspect of social life in which distinctive value-orientations & interests, centering upon large & important social concerns... generate or are accompanied by distinctive modes of social interaction. Its use emphasizes "important" social phenomenon; relationships of "strategic structural significance."
