Clades
-
Nodes
If 2 clades are linked at a node, then they are closely related
-
-
Outgroup
The most distantly related species in the cladogram which functions as a point of comparison and reference group
Molecular clocks
Definition: technique that uses the mutation rate of biomolecules to deduce the time in prehistory when two or more life forms diverged
There is evidence that mutations occur at roughly constant rate (e.g. 1 change per million years). If it is reliable, scientists can calculate the time of divergence according to the number of differences
Limitations
-
-
Over long periods, earlier changes may be reversed by later changes, potentially confounding the accuracy of predictions
Characteristics
Homologous
-
Similar structure, different function
-
Analogous
-
Different structure, similar function
Example: Wings in insects, birds and bats
