Cells & Skeletal System
3 Main Parts of a Cell
Nucleus: Control center of the cell. Contains DNA and chromosomes which are instructions for everything the cell does.
Cytoplasm: All cellular activities occur here. Contains everything in the cell except nucleus. Cytosol is the fluid part of cytoplasm, not the cytoplasm.
Plasma Membrane: Barrier, keeps substances inside the cell and keeps others outside of the cell from entering. Between extracellular fluid and intracellular fluid.
-
Membrane Transport
-
Facilitated Diffusion: Particles are not lipid soluable and don't want to touch the lipid bilayer. Facilitated with the help of a protein. Charged particles: Na+, K+, Ca+. Larger molecules include glucose.
Simple Diffusion: Movement of atoms from one area of high concentration to low until equilibrium is reached. Moves across membranes through concentration gradient. Small uncharged particles: O2, CO2, lipid soluble particles. Passive process meaning there is no cellular energy used.
Active Transport: Movement from low concentration to high concentration outside of the cell. Uses cellular energy )ATP) to move something against concentrated gradient. Uses a protein to move substance.
-
Plasma Membrane
-
Embedded with proteins which can be Receptors of chemical messages from outside of the cell, or Transporters which helps move substances in/out of the cell
Exocytosis
Process where the cell has produced something and secretes it to outside of the cell. Proteins bind to form canal in the membrane
