Explaining low levels of development
Social
Education
Poor countries, can not easily invest in education, so they continue to be poor.
High dependency ratio
Most least developed countries, have a high dependancy ratio, meaning a large amount of their population cannot be employed.
Environmental/physical
Climate
Droughts, or Floods, can damage crops.
Tropical climates, are a better home for diseases.
Natural disasters
Natural disasters can be expensive for the country, and damage development.
Landlocked
Difficult to reach trade routes, and you have to pass through other countries.
Natural resources
If the country has minimal resources, they will be able to produce little, and their wealth will not increase.
If a country has minimal development, it will only be able to sell resources, rather than products.
Many countries compete to sell resources, lowering profits, and development.
Economic
Wealth use and poor governance
Sometimes, the wealth may not be used, for the good of the people.
Debt
Most least developed counties, are in debt to most developed countries. Having to repay it, means there is less to spend on development themselves.
Political
Colonialism
Resources are colonised by countries, and then stripped of all their natural resources, with little to no money, invested in their development.
