explaining low levels of development
SOCIAL REASONS
poorer countries find it difficult to invest in proper education
The problem is made worse because many countries have a high dependency ratio - the portion of people who can't work (the young or old)
Having money to invest in a healthcare system is important for a country to develop
Clean water is essential for health. One in six people do not have access to safe water. If water is not safe, people may be unable to work or care for their families because of illness.
ECONOMIC REASONS
LEDC (less economically developed countries)
LEDC's have to compete with each other to win trade- meaning lower income for farmers.
MEDC (more economically developed countries)
there is more money to be made in processed goods, a trade MEDC's tend to do
Foreign investment can help a country to develop. Africa receives less than 5 per cent foreign direct investment. It has 15 per cent of the world's population. Europe receives 45 per cent of foreign direct investment, and only has 7 per cent of the world's population
since it is mostly developed countries that have control of the trade, they continue to develop further
LEDC's are in dept in MEDC's
ENVIRONMENTAL/ PHYSICAL REASONS
places that suffer with natural disasters such as droughts have trouble growing crops, meaning malnutrition and possible wealth drops.
exposure to natural hazards means they are constantly needing to use their money to re-build
diseases such as malaria thrive in tropical climates
when countries are landlocked they are forced to ship through other countries
having quality natural resources increases a countries chances of being highly developed.
POLITICAL REASONS
during colonialism powers such as France or England exploited less developed countries, causing them to develop much slower due to political or environmental strain
bordered of some countries were set without attention to tribal and cultural differences, causing tensions and instability.
a poorly run government system can make it difficult for countries to develop. the government spending money on things such as military weapons or favouring those who already have money makes it very difficult for the whole countrie to properly develop
corrupt leaders
