COMPOSITION OF LIVING THINGS
Chemical elements
Living things have 20 chemical elements
Most abundant:
Hydrogen
Carbon
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Substances
Chemical elements combine to form 2 kinds of substances:
Organic:
Are unique to living things.
The principal organic substances are:
Nucleic acids information:
Transper genetic information
Proteins:
Build structures, helps the immune system and the body movement
Lipids:
Energy reserve
Carbohydrates:
Provide energy
Inorganic:
Can be found in living or non-living things
There are 2 principal substances
Water:
Most abundant. Necessary for chemical reactions and transport other substances. All body fluids contain water and carry out functions
Mineral salts:
Can be disolved in bodt fluids or form part of solid structures
Contain a litle or no carbon
Cells
Unicellular:
Made up of one cell (bacteria)
Multicellular:
Made up of many cells ( animals, plants...)
