Art Therapy
The review article identifies studies from 1999–2007 that measured outcomes of art therapy effectiveness with all ages of clinical and nonclinical populations.
Limitations of art therapy in the studies reviewed were: Lack of standardized practices, lack of control group , and a tendency to use anecdotal case-by-case material than measured results.
Despite all the limitations, the 35 studies did show with varying degrees of success that art therapy is effective; although no more than standardized practices. Further study that also makes up for the aforementioned limitations is needed.
Art therapy helped decrease the stress levels and cortisol levels of 60 health care workers 24 hours after the art therapy session
The study group took part in an art therapy program that focused on a) recognising a stressful situation, b) learning how to manage stress and anxiety, and c) recognising the positive traits of the participants and their peers
The Art Therapy sessions also improved the interpersonal relationships between the employees, thereby also decreasing their stress and anxiety in the workplace.
This literature review studies the effectiveness of Art therapy by analyzing 27 studies that used art therapy with a study group that ranged from cancer patients to prison inmates. All of the people in the study group were adults.
27 studies were retrieved from four databases which were Medline, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Web of Science. The researchers were struck at the large number of articles that were actually conducted by non-certified art therapists.
Several limitations need to be addressed in order to write specific and conclusive studies in Art Therapy such as more control groups, reduce the use of other treatment methods used in conjunction with art therapy, and the experiment should be held for a longer amount of time with a certified art therapist and large enough sample.
