The preliminary examination of all firearms should include determining the brand, model, caliber designation, bore diameter, chamber dimensions, caliber design, country of origin, cartridge dimensions, action type, safety type, any modifications/alterations, any damages, type of sighting system, and rifling characteristics if applicable. The examiner should also test the firing mechanism, test the trigger pull, and test the safety feature as well as determining anything out of the ordinary throughout this whole process. Continued examination follows for each specific firearm, see A-I.
