Hyp Tree - Strategy - Background - Datopian Evolve“[open] data portal” offering (sales and marketing approach) to a DMS offering sales and marketing approach for our existing target markets of governments, NGOs and cities (looking for a data portal) whilst starting to develop our approach to enterprise customers and establishing our thought leadership in problem identification and solutions in data including “beyond big data”, “the data to insight flow”, “open architecture for data” etc (thought leadership on problem identification and solutions, not just on product).
We will do this (city/gov data portals) by building sales partnerships, revamping our offering, marketing via existing reputation networks and content marketing

Technically we will focus on an incremental path to making CKAN modular and service oriented so that we can easily scale and extend it and adding components for datastore, budgeting etc
-
Our primary focus is on taking over existing city (and gov) data portals [from e.g. Socrata, OpenDataSoft] (focusing on cost, ability to adapt to their needs) plus upselling into DM tooling (e.g. ETL etc)
These type of customers have a need for DMS type stuff as well (though they may not realise it very well)

cities are a different market to other government, and NGOs and are better because more of them, better resourced, smart cities etc etc
There are ~200s of such installs and significant customer dissatisfaction. Cities want an alternative to Socrata and that would mean catalog, datastore plus some add-ins e.g. budget
It is best risk/return because we have an existing technical solution and reputation, existing installs (so just convert not new sale) and clear advantage over competitors (openness = no lock-in, ability to customize etc)
Our secondary focus is expanding our offering into enterprise and other orgs focused on an internal data catalog/inventory [and/or agile data consulting]
-
We have a differentiator / offer around 4Ds and de-siloing and realising potential of data (beyond big data)
-
-
We have existing tools and services they want in the form of open framework, data catalog and prof services
There are these X options for what we do and our prioritisation right now is based on low risk, lowish cost to do (distance from existing capability, marketing access), market opportunity ...
