Pituitary Disorders
Acromegaly
-
-
-
Pathophysiology
Skeletal and soft tissue growth is stimulated, giving rise to giant like appearance
Local tumour expansion compresses surrounding structures resulting in headaches and visual field loss
Increased GH travels to the liver where it binds to receptors, increasing IGF-1 levels
-
Signs
Puffy lips, eyelids, skin
-
-
-
Massive growth of hands, feet, jaw
-
-
Investigations
-
-
Oral glucose test: In a normal person, a rise in blood glucose will suppress GH levels, in acromegaly the GH levels will remain high

Pituitary Tumours
-
Craniopharyngioma
-
-
-
Causes visual disturbances, growth failure, pituitary hormone deficiency, weight increase
Rathke's Cyst
-
Patients present with headache, amenorrhoea, hypopituitarism and hydrocephalus
-

-
Hyperprolactinaemia
Prolactin Physiology
Prolactin also inhibits gonadotropin releasing hormone, reducing LH/FSH and therefore testosterone and oestrogen
-
-
-
-
Aetiology
Pituitary stalk damage from surgery or adenoma - results in less dopamine so less inhibition of prolactin
