LABAREE, final
Dissatisfaction: After reading both my half of the article and the findings of my partner, I have decided that many parts of the article caused me to question my own beliefs about education. This article focussed on education as preparing students for the social structure which is something I have never thought about. These are goals that would have never crossed my mind without reading them from the Labaree article.
LABAREE, PART II
Democratic Equality
Should make Republicans
Intelligibility & Fruitfulness: This specific idea and goal of creating republicans does not make sense to me. What is the purpose of this goal? Why would the goal of education to be create republicans? This made me feel as if maybe all of these goals were not really about the goals of education, but rather the goals of society.
Equal opportunity
Intelligibility & Plausibility: This makes sense to me because I believe that students should all have the equal opportunities to attend school and become educated. This is a goal that needs to be strived for.

"Most important of all these successes, however is the strong trend in the United States toward a system allocating status on the basis of a formal educational voucher of ascribed characteristics. In this sense. the rise of the credentials market itself perhaps the proudest achievement of this progressive coalition" (Labaree, 1997, p. 62)
Plausibility: I believe that this statement is true. Jobs hire based off what they can read about you on your resume which is essentially credentials that you have earned to market yourself. This is also true for applying to college. The college never meets the student in person, but rather they see their test scores, groups they are involved in and their grades to determine if they should be admitted into the school.
Fruitfulness: Although, the quote is true, I wish that it wasn't. This makes me think that the goals of education are all wrong. Status within society is based off what degree someone has and how much money they make. But, we should be teaching in schools that every job and qualification is important to the proper functioning of society.
"The whole point of such a system is to provide some students with the chance to achieve a higher social position by acquiring an education that is somehow "better" than the education acquired by most other students. To meet this purpose, then, schooling must be highly stratified. In this sense, the social mobility goal is congruent with the social efficiency goal" (Labaree, 1997, p. 66).

"Three alternative goals for American education that have been at the root of educational conflicts over the years: democratic equality (schools should focus on preparing citizens), social efficiency (they should focus on training workers), and social mobility (they should prepare individuals to compete for social positions).” (Labraree, 1997, P. 39)
