Lost sheep #1
(Luke 15: 1-7)
Background
J's ministry going great guns
Healing, teaching, feeding
But opposition from Samaritans Scribes and Pharisees
It's in Matthew and Luke
Pharisees - a bad press ( 7 woes)
Trying to sustain the purity the Law. Encouraged people to read the Torah
Lost their passion for God (David - restore to me the joy of your salvation)
Big gathering to hear teaching
Complaints from Pharisees
Jesus welcomes sinners
Eats with them.
Become one with them
Wants to eat with you (communion)
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
Jesus hears their complaint - 'Which one of you?'
You know you would go to get the sheep
Obvious!
Shepherds have abandoned them. Sheep need a shepherd
Ezekiel 34 Slide) Talking about Israel
Sheep
They need Stay together
Never run away
May wander off
Head down
Is 53
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way
Only 2 defense mechanisms
They need a shepherd
Someone to guide them and keep them safe. To bind up their wounds and find good pasture. To find them when they stray and bring them back
Jesus says 'I am the good shepherd'
to save everyone - for ever
I will lay down my life for my sheep
Rescue the lost fine. Risk your life.
Fine But die???
Pharisees couldn't accept. Disciples didn't understand
Risking his life not enough - he had to lose his life
