Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a manner in which teachers constantly give and get feedback from their students and adjust their teaching accordingly.
Example 2: Think-Pair-Share: Students are given a problem to work on as individuals. They then partner up with another students and share their solutions and understandings of the problem.
Example 1: Quick Answer- Teacher will write a problem on the board and students will answer as quickly as possible. Class will go over question and address any misunderstandings.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are assessments that require students to perform a given task or activity.
Example 1: Treasure Hunt- Students are given a list of items they need to find around the room and must solve problems in order to find the next item.
Example 2: Student Teach- Students work on a problem as a group or as individuals and then present their findings to the class and explain how they solved the problem.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are usually tests that are used to evaluate what the students have learned at the end of a unit or section of content.
Example 1: Final Exam- Test given at the end of a unit to determine student knowledge of covered material.
Example 2: Final Project- Project that is due at the end of a unit requiring students to understand the content covered enough to successfully complete.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to determine where students are in their learning and if their are on track with the content.
Example 1: In Class post Assessment- A teacher can give a Pre assessment at the end a unit in order to determine where students' learning.
Example 2: STAAR- Test given by the state of Texas to determine knowledge of students according to their grade level.
Diagnostic
Definition: Assessments that are used to determine students' prior knowledge of the content and to better understand their strengths and weaknesses so the teacher can better prepare for teaching the given content.
Example 1: KWL Chart: Students are instructed to fill out a table with columns for what they know, what they want to know, and what they have learned after the lesson.
Example 2: Pre Assessment- Students are given an assessment and to complete it the best they can. The results are then used to determine where every student is on the content.
