Monsters Inc. and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
Habit #1 Be Proactive
When Sulley saw Boo's reaction to him in the scare simulation it changed his perspective on his job. He feels bad and realises that what they are doing is wrong. This causes him to be reactive by getting back to Boo to save her and puts an end to the scaring and instead finds an alternative that is better for the children as well as more effective.
Mike lies, starts an argument and acts all tough.
During the "kid-tastrophe", Mike and Sully are not proactive by hiding the issue. Instead of going to someone right away with the issue to get help, they hid it and end up making the situation worse.
Sulley is being proactive by waking up motivated and ready to work. He starts off by training, he exercises and practices scaring with the help of Mike. He is also proactive by choosing to walk to work instead of using Mikes car to save energy.
Randall shows an example of a defective action by cheating to get the highest scare score. He gets doors after hours to increase his score.
Mikes attitude in life is one of being proactive because towards the end of the movie, even after his fight with Sulley he comes back to apologise, he does not give up, he stays motivated and helps his friend. Even when he is trying to make the kid laugh at the end of the movie, and fails repeatedly, he did not give up and kept trying until he was successful.
Mike is excited and happy that he is on TV. He calls his family to see if everyone saw it. The expected reaction would be for him to be angry or disappointed because his face was covered by the company logo.
This type of behavior is not worth it because its just giving Randall the attention he wants and its a waste of time to argue with a bully like him because its not going to get him anywhere.
When Mike sees Randall he is scared and angry, his mood changes from a good one to a bad one. He reacts by making fun of Randall and starting an argument with him.
Habit #2 Begin With the End in Mind
When Boo enters Monsters Inc, Mike and Sulley are forced to protect her from the other monsters. This causes them to realize that children are not dangerous and that scaring children is wrong.
Top scarer: long term goal
Get Boo to sleep: short term goal
Escape restaurant: short term goal
Get Sulley in shape: long term goal
Productivity of Monsters Inc company: long term goal
Mike and Sulley's one goal is to scare children so that Sulley could be the top scarer at Monsters Inc.
Habit #5 Seek First to Understand,
Then be Understood
Sulley understand's Boo's feelings once he sees his own face on the simulation monitor and Boo's face showing how scared she is.
Sulley is upset to return Boo to her home because he has grown attached to her. She taught him to look at things from a different perspective. He also knows that he won't be able to visit her after she goes home and is saddened by that thought.
Habit #7 Sharpen the Saw
Mike helps Sulley "sharpen his saw" by motivating him to become top scarer. He does this by waking him up early and making him workout in the morning. Being physically active and healthy would help him accomplish his goal.
Habit #3 Put First Things First
Sulley goes to rescue Boo from Randall as soon as he returns to Monsters Inc, because that is his top priority.
When Sulley skis down the mountain his main priority is to escape from the Himalaya's and get back to Monsters Inc so he can rescue Boo from Randall.
Habit #6 Synergize
When Sulley needs to be re-energized, he looks at the picture that Boo drew of them together, and the piece of the door that Mike gave him. Sulley had an affection for Boo and looking at those things reminded him of her.
Habit #4 Think Win-Win
Mike and Sulley's major obstacle was meeting Boo. Her presence in the monster world was a threat and caused a major disruption. This caused the company (Monsters Inc.) to lose. Sulley also realizes that by scaring children he is making them lose as well, and therefore he is losing. Meeting Boo makes him realize that the WIN-WIN idea he had was not really a win for everyone and destroys the idea.
When Mike returned to Monsters Inc. he wanted to find Sulley so that he could talk to him. He tells him that even though he didn't think it was right for him to leave the Himalayas without him, their friendship is bigger than everything and they can go far if they work as a team. Due to Mike's sincerity, they become friends again and turn the situation into a WIN-WIN situation.
When Mike first sees any door, his WIN-WIN idea is only short term because he thinks about beating the scare record and getting a win but also gives the company a win by getting more energy. These are both relatively short term goals.
