Hero's Journey
by Audrey Napasa
Ordinary World
Hal lives as an ordinary uni student who strives to finish college peacefully without getting into trouble. She functions the way a normal college student would, attends class diligently, occasionally converses with her few friends, and scrolls through social media like any millennial would. Hal lives a routine life but deep inside wishes for something out of the ordinary to happen but wouldn't get her into trouble of course. You can say she is quite the dreamer and always sparks up unimaginable scenarios in her head.
Meeting a Mentor
On her way to class, Hal spots a black cat with a crescent shaped symbol on its forehead looking her way in the campus. Intrigued and curious, Hal moves toward the cat, but it suddenly runs to the other direction. Hal chases after the cat, and it leads her to the library. Hal spots the cat somewhere in the lesser visited area in the library and she approaches it. She was appalled when the cat suddenly speaks but listens intently at what the cat has to say about her time travel powers.
Approach to The Inmost Cave
A few months in, Hal settles in her new environment, earns the trust of companions who would guide Hal in her journey, hones her skill in manipulating time, and slowly starts to blend in this magical new world that she almost forgets about the world she originated from. In this new world that Hal finds herself in, there is a corrupt empire. Yves explains that she chose Hal because someone must be able to face the evil lurking in the system and eradicate it. Hal becomes skeptical of her role in this journey and questions whether or not she is truly capable of facing this greater evil. In the middle of Hal's journey with her companions, she starts to waver in battle and becomes wary of the magnitude of the situation she is in.
The Road Back
Hal is now stronger and wiser than ever with the possession of the Crystal of Wisdom. Her loyal allies accompany her to the final battle. Cecil warns Hal that King Wulfric wouldn't be an easy enemy to defeat, and that Hal needs all the courage and will to surpass this trial. Yves gives Hal the freedom as to whether or not she wants to back out. Hal is confident in her decision into saving this world from the hands of the corrupt empire, and tells Yves that she is going to face King Wulfric without second thoughts and hesitation.
Resurrection
Hal and her companions arrive in the fated setting. Hal is stricken with confusion and overwhelming emotion when she recognizes Wulfric as her own dead father in the real world who unfortunately does not recognize his own daughter back. It was a battle that spanned long hours but eventually, Hal defeats Wulfric. Hal looks at her own father one last time with unspoken emotion, before escaping the crumbling palace with her companions; however, unbeknownst to Hal, some of her companions' lives were taken while she was battling her own father. After the final battle, Cecil orders the knights of the empire to follow his orders now that King Wulfric's intentions are exposed and he is now slain.
Call to Adventure
Hal is on her way home through her usual route, and as she crosses the road, she is suddenly startled by an incoming vehicle about to hit her. She extends her hand as a gesture for the car to stop, and it indeed stopped but Hal notices the abruptness in the action. It was in that moment that Hal discovers she can stop and rewind time as she moves out of the car's way and rewinds time, so the car wouldn't be able to hit her in the first place. Hal sees a moving black cat in her field of vision.
Crisis
Hal is confused when she finds herself back in the real world and checks the date and time- it was exactly the week before the car accident; thus, Hal tries various methods to get back to the other world but to no avail, even her time travel powers wouldn't work and she couldn't find Yves. Hal tries looking for Cecil, but fails to do so because even he, like Yves, was missing; therefore, Hal attempts to go through her usual routine in the real world and waits for the faithful car accident day to arrive. Alas, the day arrived and she risks her life by stepping in front of the car in attempts of activating her powers, and it does stop time. All of a sudden, she is transported back to the other world during the exact moment that Cecil draws his sword on her.
Refusal of The Call
At first, Hal refuses to believe that she wields such powers; however, due to desperation she starts using her time travel powers for her own personal gain like rewinding time to correct her mistakes in an exam and a lot of other trivial uses. A week passes by before Hal entered a deep state of thinking as to why she was chosen to wield these powers. In this moment, she refuses to believe it was only a coincidence and believes that something greater is at stake. It suddenly hits Hal that someone may be watching her this whole time while using her powers. Little did she know that someone does suspect her from the peculiar turn of events.
Crossing the Threshold
The cat explains that it needed to choose someone to bestow time travel powers to, and it just so happens that it saw Hal during the near death car accident and accidentally passed on the powers to Hal so she could save herself. The cat says that there wasn't anything that it could do anymore to change the owner of the power, so Hal would have to do. In truth, Hal is still hesitant but she nods in slight confusion and understanding to whatever the cat explains. All of a sudden, a book drops out of nowhere from the shelves and lits up while opened on a certain page. Hal realises from the images of the book that it was a book about one of her favorite RPG video games, but is awakened from her reverie when a blinding light curtains the whole library, and all of a sudden she is transported alongside the cat to a different place.
Return with Elixir
Yves tells Hal now that she managed to conquer the evil in this world, she is free to go back to the real world; although Hal has second thoughts in returning because contrary to how she felt in the beginning, she now feels as if this was where she belonged. Despite those thoughts, Hal knew deep inside that she had unfinished business in the real world, and she had to return one way or another. Hal bids her emotional farewells to her companions, Yves, and Cecil, as she crosses the threshold once again to go back to the real world. In the real world, Hal goes about her usual "ordinary" uni life, but notes certain changes such as becoming closer to her companions in the other world, now in the real world along Cecil. One day, Hal plays her favorite video game wherein the other world was based off and notices something in the game that wasn't there before- she sees herself, Yves, Cecil, and her other companions as characters in the video game.
Reward (Seizing the Sword)
Hal manages to avoid Cecil's sword this time. Then comes the period where Cecil turns his back on the empire and accompanies Hal and her companions into defeating the prime evil. Hal, alongside her companions, Yves, and Cecil, make their way to King Wulfric. On their way to the palace, they visit the Temple of Time; and Hal obtains the Crystal of Wisdom, a powerful crystal said to bestow exceptional power to whoever has it in possesion. Yves explains that crystal will help Hal control her time powers in the last stretch; thus, they make their way towards the empire.
Ordeal
In one of the battles that wages in Hal's journey, she meets someone who is also from the real world; however, this particular boy knows who Hal is even from the real world to Hal's surprise, and is actually one of her closest friends. The boy named Cecil is the crown prince of the empire, the very empire that Hal seeks to defeat. Hal is confused at this moment and is hesitant in attacking Cecil, so she let's her guard down and Cecil finds an opening in drawing his sword towards Hal. Hal draws confusion at Cecil's distraught expression and him briefly apologizing to Hal before attacking her with his sword. Hal suddenly jolts awake and is surprised to find herself in her own room..... in the real world.
Tests, Allies, Enemies
Hal is transported to a different dimension which is funnily enough, the world in one of her favorite RPG video games. Hal is genuinely baffled in the beginning but realises that this is the out of the ordinary event that she longs for from the start, and she starts getting a little excited at the prospect of being an actual heroine in a video game. She earned questioning and weird looks from the people around her at first because of her peculiar modern clothes but she fits in soon enough. Hal is accompanied by the cat in her journey who is now a human, and she, the cat named Yves, explains that in this world, Hal is a time mage, and that Hal cannot go back to the real world until the right time. She meets a lot of possible allies and enemies and is surprised that some of the companions she meets in this world are people she knows in the real world but have no recollection of knowing who Hal is and what the real world is.
