Ethical Considerations of using CRISPR/Cas9
Arguments for CRISPR
positive response or somatic cells
is 'cure all' for lots of diseases
treatment for allergies
treatment for cancer
wide range of possibilities
impact quality of life, life span, and evolution
innovative technology that can change out blueprint
Policy
compare use of somatic vs germline cells
I do not think there is a need to do germline research until we have a need for it outside of somatic research
education people without scientific background
CRISPR use needs to be regulated by some committee
consideration with germline cell editing
what should be allowed or not from an ethical standpoint?
propose my opinion on CRISPR and if it should be morally permissible and to what extent
Arguments against CRISPR
where is the line drawn?
eventual goals/ outcomes of gene editing?
worried about wrong motives (especially in embryos)
fear of use to increase military performance
other countries as they advance in CRISPR research may have a /one up' on others because they can use CRISPR in war, self defense, etc
effect on evolution
how will these genes pass down-normally?
next gen unable to consent
effect on natural selection
safety concerns
consent
designer babies
off-target events
mosaicism
eugenics
using CRISPR for non medical treatment and more cosmetic
scientists will be out of control with this 'power'
this needs to be regulated
Application of CRISPR
cure cancer
cure sickle cell disease
cure allergies
determining which genes are involved in causing allergies
