Cardiac Output
Heart Rate
Our heart rates are directly effected by both the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system
-
The number of beats per minute. A normal resting heart rate is anywhere from 60-100 beats per minute. Generally a lower heart rate implies better cardiovascular health, and those with lower resting heart rates are athletes, or very active individuals.
Regulation of Heart Rate

Other Factors
Age, Gender, exercise and body temperature but are the less important factors

Cardiac Output
Amount of blood pumped out of a ventricle in one minute. It can be calculated by multiplying heart rate and stroke volume together.
-
Size, Location, and Orientation
The heart is approximately the size of a first, it weighs less than 1 pound.
-The heart is located in the mediastinum between the 2nd rib and 5th intercostal.
-The heart is located on the superior surface of the diaphragm, anterior to the vertebral column, and posterior to the sternum
-2/3s of the heart is to the left of the mid-sternal line
Homeostatic Imbalance of Cardiac Output: the hearts pumping action maintains a balance between cardiac output and venous return
Congestive Heart Failure ( CHF): inefficient pump that blood circulation isinadequate to meet tissue needs
Causes: Coronary atherosclerosis, persistent high blood pressure, multiple myocardial infractions and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)
