- - - - Example 1: District assessments (DAs)- DAs are given at the end of each unit of study. In subjects such as math, a lot of concepts are being built from unit to unit. DAs then allow teachers, as well as schools and districts, to see how students are progressing in their learning.
      - Example 2: MAP testing- MAP is an assessment that occurs at the beginning, middle, and end of the academic school year. It gauges student growth and how they are progressing through the year, as well as from grade level to grade level over time.
- - - - Example 1: Sight reading- Students who are in musical electives, whether that's band, choir, or orchestra, will be asked to sight read. Sight reading is a task given to students to test their knowledge on notes, inflictions in sound, and more. It's a way for the instructor to judge how well the student understands what has been taught to them.
      - Example 2: Fairs- A lot of times students participate in science fairs, social studies fairs, etc. Teachers from different subjects use fairs to allow their students to be creative and to show them what they know.
- - - - Example 1: Practice test- Students are given an example of a test that could be given at the end of their unit of study. Students complete the test to the best of their ability. It will show the teacher which concepts students may or may not have prior knowledge of.
      - Example 2: KWL Chart- KWL charts are great to use as an activity in the classroom when wanting to see first what the students know and then what they would like to know about a certain topic. The Learned part of the chart can be used for after students begin to learn about the topic or concept. If students have a good bit of information to write about in their Know section of the KWL chart, then a teacher knows that the students can be given more challenging work because they know a great deal about the topic or concept already.
- - - - Example 1: STAAR: The standardized test in the state of Texas. Students are tested over concepts that have been covered over the course of an academic school year. It is considered "high-stakes" by many.
      - Example 2: Class projects: At the end of a unit of study, a class project is a great way for students to be assessed on what they have learned. For instance, in Social Studies, a teacher may have students research a specific event in history in order to expand student knowledge on the event. It's also a way for the teacher to be able to assess their students' ability to produce a quality piece of work and their overall understanding of the topic.
- - - - Example 1: Practice quizzes: Students complete quizzes that just test their knowledge on a specific concept taught in class that day. This is to judge what needs to be taught in subsequent lessons.
      - Example 2: Discussions: Students talk within the class about concepts being taught in class. For example, students may talk about what they know about volume and have a discussion over what volume really is and the real-life examples they may have.
