How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?
I designed and created my three products of a music video, digipak and website based off of a ‘indie’ baseline; which through my research, I found that the typical conventions within indie products tended to be unconventional and completely original to the product.
Costumes
Despite the band member's outfits being illustrated on top of the original image, the sense of branding still remains due to the consistent use of colours which the audience members would have become familiar with.
I created a sense of branding through the 'band members'/actors costumes. They all wear the same outfits in all three of the final products - showing a direct link between the products and their relevance to one another.
Illustrations
However, I experimented with the use of illustrations within my music video during the third draft, which I concluded to be an unsuccessful feature within my product as it created an unfinished/ simple outcome.
I had a prominent use of illustrations in two out of three of my products; the digipak and website. In the digipak illustrations are present on the front, back and first inside panel - all varying in the ways the illustrations are being shown, whereas for the website illustrations are present on certain pages.
Locations
I had made the creative decision to take photos for my website and digipak within the locations present in my music video. This enabled there to a be direct sense of branding and link between each of my products as it was clearly identifiable the products were based off the main product of the music video.
The genre of my bands’ music is Indie Rock - thoroughly influencing how I would create a sense of branding within my products.
Use of colour, shapes and style
Font
The band name of 'Common Culture' which is evident across all three products are all present in the same typeface, creating a direct identity/form of branding for the band - which is reinforced throughout each of the products and its consistent use of the same font.
I had purposely chosen this specific font to represent my band's identity and essentially its branding as I found it had connotations of being rough and abstract; like the Rock genre, while enabling the fluidity of the lines and adaptability of its colour to link back to the Indie genre of my product.
Social Media
Linked on the bands' social media accounts which I created, are announcements referencing back to their products i.e their album, alongside behind the scene posts hyping up the products for the viewers - which create buzz. Also on each of the social media accounts is the youtube link to their music video to their new song 'Apollo'.
Actors
The same actors are used to portray the band members across all three products forming a sense of branding for them as individual people, and as Common Culture.
The actors/band members have all also been associated with a specific pastel colour, enabling the audience to visually see a direct link between them and all the products; creating a sense of branding through the prominent feature of them and their colour.
Colours
I used the colour mint green to act as a metaphor for the new/fresh start the band members had that day.
All three products feature the same or similar house style; with the use of colours of mint green, yellow and purple. The consistent use of these three colours throughout represented each band members’ identity/branding - again enforced through the prominent house style within all of the digipak panels and illustrations on the website .
Purple is typically associated with connotations of royalty, however, I used this colour in order to compliment the mint green and yellow, diversifying the already warm/summery tones, relating back to the Indie genre and its use of a range of colours, allowing each product to be unique.
Yellow is a colour I chose which has connotations of happiness, sunlight and potentially warmth. This relates back to my intended concept of my products as I wanted it to represent a fun, summer's day out for the band members as they go about their 'new', spontaneous lives for the day.
