Cardiac Output (CO)
Facts of CO
Definition: volume of blood pumped out by each ventricle in 1 min (mL/min or L/min); Avg. resting CO = 5.25L/min
-
-
An increase in either HR or SV, increases CO
-
Is regulated by
Stroke Volume (SV) - the volume of blood pumped out by one ventricle with each beat. It correlates with the force of ventricular contraction.
Stroke volume depends on: preload, contractility, and afterload.
-
-
-
SV = End Diastolic Volume (EDV) (the amount of blood that collects in a ventricle during diastole) - End Systolic Volume (ESV) (the amount of blood remaining in a ventricle after it has contracted)
