Swelling, discharge, skin change, fever
Breastfeeding
Pathophysiology
Non-infective
Obstructed milk drainage from one section of breast
(restricted feeding, badly positioned baby, blocked duct, compression from bra)

Management
Medical
Abx
Indication: infective mastitis
E.g. penicillinase-resistant penicillins
e.g. flucloxacillin or cephalosporin e.g. cefalexin
MOA: destroy S aureus
Analgesia
Indication: paiin
E.g. paracetamol, NSAIDs
Conservative
Admit if acutely unwell, otherwise manage at home
Check breastfeeding technique
Continued breast feeding (resolves obstruction)
