The Relationship between Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis
Processes
Photosynthesis
Light Reaction
Photosystem II captures light energy and releases an electron.
Electrons travel down the Electron Transport Chain. It produces ATP when hydrogen ions cross the gradient with ATP synthase. Oxygen is released.
Photosystem I captures light energy and releases an electron
Energized electrons that are from Photosystem I get captured by NADP+ and mixed with Hydrogen ions to make NADPH.
Light energy converts to chemical energy and produces oxygen.
Calvin Cycle
Carbon is absorbed which is reduced to CH2O because it uses ATP and NADPH. There are 3 steps.
Cellular Respiration
Prep Reaction
Pyruvate then enters the mitochondrial matrix and is converted to 2- carbon acetyl group and forms acetyl-CoA. This is where electrons are picked up by NAD. CO2 is transported out of the mitochondria.
Citric acid cycle
Oxidation occurs and NAD+ is reduced to NADH. Carbon dioxide is released. The production of ATP occurs. Oxidation happens when FAD reduces down to FADH+ and NAD+. The cycle keeps repeating.
Glycolysis
Glucose is broken down into 2 pyruvates.
Electron Transport Chain
NADH and FADH+ electrons are passed until they get oxygen. When oxygen combines with hydrogen ions you get water. The hydrogen ions get pumped into the intermembrane. This produces a gradient. The ATP synthase synthesizes to ATP from ADP. ATP is energy which can be used for cellular work.
Where it happens
Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide and water diffuse in the chloroplasts. Then photosynthesis takes place
Chloroplasts contain thylakoids. Thylakoids contain chlorophyll which helps absorb the solar energy that helps photosynthesis happen.
The stroma is in the chloroplasts. This is where carbon dioxide is reduced into a carbohydrate.
Takes place in the green parts in plants.
Cellular Respiration
Location
Preparatory reaction takes place in the mitochondria.
Citric Acid Cycle takes place in the mitochondrial matrix.
Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm.
Electron Transport Chain takes place in the mitochondrial membrane.
Equations
Photosynthesis
6 CO2 + 6 H2o --> C6H12O6 +6 O2
Cellular Respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
