The rise and risk of loneliness in an age of connection

A study done at Duke University found that, on days they use technology more, at-risk adolescents experienced more conduct problems and higher ADHD symptoms compared to days they used technology less. On the flip side, the study also found that those same adolescents experienced less depression and anxiety on days they used technology more.

“Nearly 70 percent of U.S. adults experience digital eye strain as a result of the growing use of technological devices," the researchers wrote in the report. "Adults aged 18 to 34 report feeling eye strain at a higher rate (45 percent) than their older counterparts.

When you bend your head down, the head is no longer supported by the whole system of the vertebrae, but only by the neck. This puts unnecessary strain on the neck muscles and can lead to pain, including tension headaches. Laptops create especially poor posture for the neck, as users tend to hunch down to look at them. Holding your cell phone between your neck and your shoulder may be a cheap hands-free option, but it also puts your neck in an unhealthy position

A 2018 study of adults by health insurer Cigna found that loneliness has reached "epidemic levels" in the U.S. – and that young adults are more lonely and in poorer health than the elderly.


We all know anxiety and depression can affect our physical and mental health. Many people are surprised to learn loneliness can have the same effect. One study found that loneliness has a similar impact on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes each day.

Despite its potential to help us make connections, technology can also encourage and provide an outlet for a me-centered mentality. A study from the University of Western Illinois investigated the relationship between two aspects of narcissism—grandiose exhibitionism and entitlement/exploitativeness—and Facebook behavior.


Those who scored high on a test for grandiose exhibitionism tended to use Facebook for self-promoting activities
