Race&Ethnicity: Living a Mixed Life (Celebrities that are Mixed…

- - - - Just because I didn't realize Frida was of mixed race decent doesn't mean she wasn't. There are many of us out in the world, which to another's eyes may look single faceted but we come form many different places. This struggle with not "looking the part" is something I face every day and has been a struggle to find my own identity.
        
        I explored some of this struggle in my recent blog post discussing Visual Culture and Identity as it pertains to me personally. In my post I linked a video from Refinery29 ( https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/latinx-hispanic-heritage-month-2018 ) It explains that there is no one way to be Latina and that should be celebrated.
        
        So what does it even look like to be Latin? Where is Latin America? What counts? "Geographically, the term refers to a set of nations belonging to the regions of North America, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. Culturally and linguistically, Latin America is defined as nations in the Americas and the Caribbean whose residents predominantly speak Spanish or Portuguese—two of the many languages descended from Latin." (Turner-Trujillo et al. 2017)
        
        Beautifully, this article goes on to talk about the historical richness of the Latin community and describes the culture as inclusive, "To sum up, the heritage of Latin America blends indigenous, European, African, and Asian peoples, languages, and cultural traditions. There is no one Latin America, or Latino or Latin American culture—rather, it is all these things."
        
        There are many LatinX people who are, however, not taking such prideful ownership of their identity as sited from Washington Post article, "...although recent immigrants identify as Hispanic at a rate of almost 90 percent, this number drops to around 50 percent after the fourth generation. Currently, 11 percent of adults with Hispanic ancestry do not identify as such, the report stated, and 23 percent of Hispanics most often refer to themselves as “American.” (Morales, 2018)

        “The national images of racially mixed people have dramatically changed just within the last few years, from ‘mulattoes’ as psychically divided, racially impure outcasts to being hip new millennials who attractively embody the resolution of America’s race problem,” said Michele Elam, an associate professor of English at Stanford University." (Lee 2011)
        
        Our disgust with mixed blood has turned to fascination which is no better. As if somehow that quality alone makes a person more interesting or desirable. They're different, an anomaly.

        Ms. Durrow responded that if people go back far enough in their genealogy they will discover a mixed experience, which the festival defines broadly to include interracial couples, multiracial families and transracial adoption. “There is nothing exclusive about this club at all,” she said.
