Ch. 8: Nervous System
8-5: Meninges
Dura Mater: outermost membrane that is attached to the inner periosteum of the skull, tough white fibrous CT, contains many blood vessels and nerves
Arachnoid mater: middle layer, thin net-like membrane
-
Pia Mater: inner layer that clings to brain surface, very thin delicate CT, many nerves and blood vessels, dips into grooves and contours
Spinal cord
Space between the dura mater and the bone is called the epidural space and is filled with loose CT and fat- epidural space
Ventricles and Cerebrospinal fluid: CSF fills the ventricles within the cerebral hemispheres and brain stems
-
-
CSF circulates down into the 3rd and 4th ventricle then into the central canal or subarachnoid space
CSF is reabsorbed into the bloodstream through arachnoid granulations that project into the dural sinuses
CSF: total volume (150 mL), 1 liter is secreted daily to replenish

8-6: the spinal cord
Gross anatomy: length (17 inches), contains 31 segments, cauda equina (lower lumbar), filum terminale (distal portion of the tail)
Cross- sectionals: Gray matter or butterfly, posterior horns, lateral horns, anterior horns
White matter: posterior or white column, later white column, and anterior white column
