Structure and form in "An Inspector Calls"
The effect of having only one room for the whole play.
This design choice helps produce a claustrophobic and intense atmosphere for the characters.
It also emphasises the Birlings' private life and their self-centredness.
The scene also highlights the unwelcome arrival of the inspector who brings in bad news from the outside of the house and set.
Why are the characters in this order of being questioned?
Mr. Birling, Sheila, Gerald, Mrs. Birling, Eric.
The audience expects the story to go chronologically but it does not, this builds tension for the audience and draws them into finding out the full plot of the play. Emphasizing the hidden meanings in the play.
As well as this Mrs. Birling is most opposed to Eric's actions of getting Eva pregnant this is dramatic irony for the audience as she does not know that Eric is listening and is the father of the child. This also leads to a dramatic part of the play as this fact is revealed and we get to see Mrs. Birling true colours and feelings before realising it is her own family and so acts differently in that situation, telling us of the families true feelings and connections to Eva.
Exits.
This can signal a character's wanting to escape, for example Sheila runs of stage when she realises that she is the reason Eva lost her job. She wishes to leave the intense atmosphere and she runs away from telling her story.
The Inspector leaves Gerald and Sheila alone in order for them to talk but he could also be using this in order to get information as they discuss Daisy.
Dramatic beginnings and ends.
Act One ends with the inspector asking "Well?". Act two opens with the same moment. The audience will wonder about the answer to question during the break which builds suspense.
The end of Act Two is another cliffhanger. The front door slams signalling Eric's return, but Priestley makes the audience wait until Act Three to hear his confession.
