Historical Significance
-
While this is a fiction novel, there is a lot of connections to the real world in it. Many women get objectified like this today. Birth rates are actually decreasing also.
Uses religion to justify why they are raping women (they don't consider it rape since it is for the greater good)
-
Figurative Language
lots of imagery, similes and metaphors used to help depict the constant change of past and present as well as the setting.
Offred- the main character. The book is told by her and she is constantly recalling old memories to show how her character has changed into her more obedient and rule-following self.

-
-
Ofwarren- one of the handmaids who gives birth in the book. This scene provides a lot of detail about how they do birth in Gilead.
-
Moira- Offred's past best friend who joins her in the new world of Gilead, but escapes to a sex house. She is mostly in Offred's flashbacks besides at Jezebel's
-
-
Luke and Hannah- Husband and Daughter of Offred (June) They are not introduced in the book only part of her memories/flashbacks.
