The term was first printed in the New York Journal in 1900 described as a “free and untrammeled white citizen of Alabama, who lives in the hills, has no means to speak of, dresses as he can, talks as he pleases, drinks whiskey when he gets it, and fires off his revolver as the fancy takes him” (Cooke-Jackson et al., 2008, p.187).

A shift in acceptance began with the election of Jimmy Carter, mountain people become more proud of their heritage. Though never really accepting the term 'hillbilly' some do identify as 'redneck' proudly.
