DESIGN PROBLEM
SUBTROPICAL DESIGN
Air flow and cross ventilation is VITAL to controlling temperature. Heat rises - locate windows high to allow it to escape
Controlling temperature through orientation. Living areas on the North side of the house. Utility spaces/ bedrooms on the Western side (where you spend less time during the day)
Linking indoor and outdoor spaces to encourage airflow, natural light, get people spending time outdoors
Open plan living spaces encourage airflow
Shaded outdoor areas - so that it's pleasant to spend time outside
Wide eaves/ overhangs limit the amount of sun that comes into the house
Building shape can promote breeze. Long and narrow = good
Light coloured and smooth textured roofs = heat reflects.
Dark colours = attracts heat
Insulation to keep heat out in summer/ in during winter
