The North- South divide
What is it
Refers to the real or imagined cultural & economic differences between the south of England and the rest of the UK
In general, the south enjoys higher incomes & longer life expectancy . But it also has higher house prices and more traffic congestion
Why is there a divide?
- During the industrial revolution, the UK's growth was centred on coalfields, heave industries and engineering in Northern England, Scotland & Wales
- Since the 1970s, many industries have declined, reducing prosperity in those areas
- London & SE have developed rapidly due to a fast growing service sector
