Summative
Definition: The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against standards and/or benchmarks. These assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value.
Mid-term/Final Exam: Exams given after an extended period of time to assess student progress. Usually given at the middle of the year and end of the year.
Written Exam: Written exams can be used at the end of a unit to have student write about the content they learned.
Formative
Definition: The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. They are generally low stakes and therefore, have little to no grade value.
Exit Ticket: Small pieces of paper or cards that students deposit as they leave the classroom. It can be used as a quick write over what they learned that day or another quick check of their understanding of the lesson.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are used to evaluate where students are in their learning process and determine where they are on track to performing well on future assessments.
District Assessment: District mandated test given at the end of every six weeks to check student progress in each subject area.
STAAR: Texas standardized test given to assess students' knowledge and achievement in their grade level.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Presentation: This activity would require students to do a report of some kind and present their information to the rest of the class.
Skit: Acting as a means of assessment can include a variety of performances. A skit could look like acting out an event in history or retelling what happened in a book.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. It is primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning.
