Assessments

Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is used to MONITOR student learning. It allows constant feedback to be given through a unit. This type of assessment can help teachers monitor and adjust their instruction. These are low stakes.
Exit-Tickets: Students will fill out the teacher generated exit-ticket. The exit-ticket will be created over the content that was JUST taught. This will allow the teacher to look at whether the students grasped the concept or if they will have to adjust their lesson for the next day.
One Minute Papers: Students will be given one-minute to write what the main topic of the lesson was, what they found confusing, what they found interesting, and what question they may see in the future on an exam.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate what the student has learned by the end of a Unit. Summative assessments have higher stakes than formative assessments, so they usually count for more.
Unit Test: A unit test, evaluates what information students have comprehended throughout. It shows their ability to apply these newer concepts.
Final Project: Students will take what they have learned throughout the entire course (or unit depending on grade level) and they will create a way of organizing and presenting this information. It will evaluate what they have taken away from class.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is not like regular exams where it is pen and paper and you are answering questions. This type of assessment allows students to put on a performance of what they learned,
Skit: Students are able to take what they have learned and create a skit that allows them to act it out. This could be great with the content areas and bring in creativity.
Song: The students are able to come up with a song that includes the content from the unit. They will pick a beat and write the lyrics that are content-focused.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: The interim/benchmark assessment is used to track student progress. This will show if the student is falling behind or if they are showing growth.
STAAR Benchmark: On the TEA website, there are released STAAR tests. The placement I am in this year is using last years STAAR test and we will be benchmarking our students.
MAP Testing: MAP testing is used in the schools to track growth. They take the results and compare them to other students that have taken the test, putting the students into percentiles.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic Assessments are what we call pre-assessments. This assess the background knowledge of students and can identify the strengths and weaknesses. This is great help to the planning process.
Four Corners: As a quick pre-check, you may give students a question over the topic. They will have to choose a corner depending on if it is answer choice A, B, C, or D. This will give you a quick pre-check on what the student understands.
Carousel Activity: Around the room will be anchor charts that pose a topic or a question. As the teacher you will group students together and then you will have them visit each poster and doing a "braindump" over that particular topic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZxaS7v1-jo
