Diffraction
-
General
-
When the gap is smaller than the wavelength, the waves, mostly, just get reflected back, which means that no diffraction occurs so this sentence is quite pointless.
When the gap size is a lot bigger than the wavelength of the wave, no diffraction occurs.
When waves meet an obstacle, they will diffract around it. With light, just behind the object you will get a shadow. This is the area where the wave isn't able to diffract to.
-
Intensity of Light
-
There are more photons hitting the central maximum, per second, than any of the other bright fringes.
The central maximum in a single-slit diffraction pattern is the brightest part of the pattern. This is because the intensity of the light is highest at the centre.
