Design Requirements Affinity Map
Assumptions
You cant rely on students to book seats and turn up
Students don't like wasting valuable time in the library
There will never be enough seats at the library to accommodate everyone
There may be no charging facilities nearby
The initial layout of the library can be overwhelming and confusing to most students.
Students will be willing to download our app
Sometimes students cannot tell if someone is saving a seat with their belongings or if they have just left their waste behind
Students can hog seats for a long period of time
Students will want to make more efficient use of their time
It is hard to locate vacant study rooms
APP Ideas
Heat map view
Real time monitoring
To provide the option to book study group rooms
Allows you to view free study spaces at any time
Shows what times during the are the quietest / busiest
Keeps track of your study hours within the library
Capacity sensor
Student profile that shows if you turn up to booked study rooms or not
Shows map of library seating for each floor
Shows exactly where free seats at that time are located
Gives a reminder to students who have booked a study room 30 mins prior to booking time and asks if you will be attending or not
App tailors itself to your study routine
Shows exactly how many seats are free at any given time eg: 120/700 seats are free
Student gets a notification during the times they usually study to inform them if the library is quiet or busy at this time.
Problem Space
Students leave their belongings at desks to save their seat and don't return for hours
Seat hogging
Individuals tend to take the first seat they see to be available due to intimidation which often leads to individuals occupying spaces intended for groups
One individual can occupy a space that can accommodate more than one person
There are not enough facilities in all areas of the library to charge laptops and phones
Students book seats and study rooms and then don't turn up
Individual students are sometimes forced to work in noisy and distracting areas
Students can often be confused on whether some areas in the library need to be booked or if they are available to everyone at any time
Groups often remain in their study space after they have finished their group work just to chat.
Goals and Objectives
To provide an efficient way to use the library
To create an app which enables users to view the seat availability before entering the library and knowing the location of the free seats
To monitor activity in the library in real time
To potentially use various types of technology such as sensory systems to monitor seat availability
To create a system that can be easily implemented in the library
To make the library a less stressful environment for users
To make it easier for students to manage their time
To help the library to monitor and enforce the 45 minute rule
To help and encourage incoming students to use the library
Competitors in the market
Sensory systems in the library
Library seat availablity checking system
Seat patroller
Capacity sensor
Study hunt - live monitoring for seat availability
Possible solutions
Rooms and spaces should be labelled clearly to avoid confusion on whether rooms need to be booked or not
Don't allow individuals to book seats
Make it necessary for all groups who do work in the library to book rooms
When groups book study rooms they must state for how many and give all participants ID numbers
