Formative
Definition: Formative Assessment is the process of gathering evidence of student learning in order to provide feedback and adjust instructional strategies. These assessments can consist of informal by observation, or formal which can be done by quizzes.

Think-Pair-Share: Students think about what they have just learned and pair up with a partner then share their information.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are done to examine or evaluate the skill of students through a task. This helps know a students strength and weakness.
Portfolio: Portfolios allow students to engage in self-reflection and make connections between the learning that was done throughout the semester.
Journals: Students write a self-refelctoin about what it is they have just learned that day or week.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are done periodically throughout the school year. This usually has low-level/little feedback and are more formal.
STARR: Standardized test in the state of Texas to assess students' knowledge of achievements starting in the third grade.
MAP: Test done on the computer in beginning, middle, and end of year. Taken to assess student achievement in Math and Reading.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are done at the end of a large chunk of learning. The teacher gets to choose what to review and are usually high stakes, meaning they have high grade value.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are a form of pre-assessments that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction.
Running Records: Used to assess a student's reading level. Teacher keeps track of student accuracy during reading.
Word List Reading: A way to assess students knowledge of sight words. Teacher has a list of sight words on a paper and students read the words one by one.
