Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.
Examples: Drawing a concept map in class to understand a topic, submit one or two sentences identifying the main points of a lecture.
Benchmark
Definition: These types of assessments evaluate students against content standards and learning goals. They can also identify students strengths and needs.
Examples: MAP Test, Renaissance Star
Summative
Definition: Summative assessment are used to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Examples: Midterm Exam, Final Project

Diagnostic
Definition: A form of a pre-assessment that allows teachers to see a student's strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills in regards to a content area. These assessments help guide curriculum planning.
Examples: pre-test on money, pre-test on seasons
