Alfonso XIII
Alfonso XIII was crowned as king at the age of sixteen. He relished his power and intervened in the affairs of parliament. The result is extreme political instability, and 33 governments were formed in Spain between 1902 and 1923.

Miguel Primo de Rivera
One week before the publication of a report directly showing Alfonso XIII being a part in the disastrous outcome of the Battle of Annual, General Miguel Primo de Rivera orchestrated a coup that toppled the parliamentary government. With Alfonso’s support, Primo de Rivera established a dictatorship.

The Spanish economy was suffering greatly as a result of the global depression, and Alfonso forced Primo de Rivera’s to resign. The monarchy had become too closely associated with the excesses of the dictatorship, and Republican sentiment had grown too strong and the people no longer tolerate the king constantly meddling in Spain's politics. An alliance of former liberal monarchists, Catalan politicians, and Republicans met at San Sebastián on August 17, 1930, and agreed to overthrow the king.
