Ecosystems
communities of organisms living together in combination with their physical environment
Abiotic = all nonliving parts of an ecosystem
Examples: Air, Water, Rocks
Biotic = all living parts of an ecosystem
Trees, animals, fungi
community consists of all the populations of all the species that live together in a particular area
Can be small or large; extremely diverse
Ocean ecosystems are most common on Earth
Freshwater ecosystems are the rarest, covering only 1.8% of the Earth's surface
Examples of terrestrial biomes:
Tropical rainforests
savannas
deserts
coniferous forests
deciduous forests
tundra
Ecosystems are dynamic (always changing)
Controlled by two types of factors:
External factors - control overall structure of the ecosystem
Climate
Topography
Time
Types of species present
Internal factors control the internal structure of an ecosystem
Decomposition
Resource availability
Types of species present
Nutrients and energy cycle within an ecosystem
