Hyperventilation Syndrome
Facts
frequently encountered
commonly associated w situations when emotionally upset/excited
patients suffering panic attacks also suffer from HVS
can be caused by serious medical problem
pulmonary embolism + myocardial infarction present similarly
Signs/Symptoms - General
nervousness/anxiety
shortness of breath
tachypnea
tachycardia
chest tightness
Signs/Symptoms - Exclusive
dizziness
fatigue
numbness/tingling around mouth, hands, + feet
carpopedal spasm (fingers/feet; causes cramps)
seizures that may be precipitated in patient w seizure disorder
Treatment
calm patient + slow breathing
remove patient from source of anxiety
instruct patient to consciously slow breathing + amount of air he intakes
one technique is closing mouth, breathing through nose
do not have patient breathe into paper bag
can be fatal
unless specifically instructed by med direction
O2 via nasal cannula at 2lpm
Pathophysiology
feeling of not being able to catch breath
begin to "blow off" excessive amounts of CO2
certain level of CO2 needed for body to function normally
when too much exhaled, worsened S/S
becomes more anxious
calcium level decreases, causing muscles in hands/feet to cramp
