history consistent w inhalation injury
presence of chemicals about the face from the exposure
oral or pharyngeal burns
possible hoarseness
dizziness, feelings of malaise
seizures
nausea, vomiting, abdominal distress/pain
vitals changes
Pathophysiology
commonly inhaled poisons
carbon monoxide
cyanide
natural gas
chlorine gas
liquid chemicals/sprays
ammonia
sulfur dioxide
anesthetic gases
solvents
industrial gases
hydrogen sulfide
fumes/smoke from fire
paints/freon
glue (toluene)
nitrogen dioxide (silo gas)
amyl/butyl nitrate
presence of toxic exposure may not be evident
first indication might be patient's collapse
causes swelling of soft tissues that line upper airway
some can cause displacement of O2 in alveoli
can cause death of patient
Signs/Symptoms - General
findings of respiratory distress
cough, stridor, wheezing, or crackles
headache
confusion
altered mental status
cyanosis or other skin color changes
Treatment
try to arrange ALS intercept
NRB mask at 15 LPM
PPV if needed
