increased accessory muscle use
sternal + intercostal retractions during inspiration
tachypnea
tachycardia
nasal flaring - breathing w open mouth
prolonged exhalation w pursed lips
frequent coughing
cyanosis
anxiety
confusion
inability to speak full sentences
Signs of Respiratory Failure
altered mental status
vitals change
extremely fast/slow/irregular breathing pattern
cyanosis to core of body + mucous membranes
loss of muscle tone
diminished/absent breath sounds
decreased response to pain
inadequate Vt
retractions
Decompensate very quickly from distress to failure
Have many body changes that differ from normal aged patients
