Both/and as students are working through their degrees. If you are paying for these certificates can you get this stuff along with you?
If you get the degree, you are banking credits or part of the money that allows you to go on and get extra credentials -- LONG TAIL OF EDUCATION. Institutionalize the ability of students to have lifelong learning.
If you got your BS in Robotech and come back, you get your first one at half price.
The student made an investment in your institution so the instution makes an investment in the student to be a lifelong learner and then you get more money as an alum
Demographic shifts
Fewer students in Northern New England/NY than ever before, so don't be woe is me, but think about how to do stuff better and do what we can to expand the base of people who get the opportunity, while realizing that you are not so far from NYC where there is a huge group of students that you are alreayd starting to recruit, so how are you interexting//accessible to that group of students?
Multidimensional strategic enrollment plan. (Diversity & Equity) Most of these students will be non-white, so it becomes more imporant to recruit faculty and staff of color -- Faculty Fellows idea. Late stage ABD candidates in various disciplines for 2 year gigs so they get 2 years of traininga sthey finish the PhD, students are always getting new dynamic faculty, and you won't have all of them stay, but some of them will. VIRTUOUS CYCLE OF RECRUITMENT
Global Climate Change works for us. SUNY Canton wil lbe a place where new ideas about technologies. How much longer is the growing season in St. Lawrence county than it was 10 years ago? Now there is a month more of time that you can put things in the ground and harvest them. Are we paying attention to that stuff? Because then we can start thinking about agricultural technologies (microcredentialiing) not only in sustainable farming but what goes along with that and how do you market it in a way that is smart and take advantage of the microsystem? Cost per product is more so you can have a sustainable farm in stead of trying to beat sustainable business.
Okay for campus to be what it is. Not everyone has to be Harvard (necessary evil). But you don't necessarily growth; you just need consistent development of what you have. Have better programs instead of adding programs. Ecosystem can be more stable (ideology of the cancer cell). What a stable system wants and needs to have. Stable enrollment at 3100 students. SP should be based on stability instead o growth.
Funding
SUNY Canton gets less per student than any other state university does. Do things that matter visibly Use success to draw more eyes to success.
What are metrics for success. You don't want to be SUNY Binghamton because you can't win so instead look for opportunity index. What is your ability to change a stundets exonomic perspective? Measure and assess small town that's helped by the fact that your university is there.
The Economist? US News and World Report? How much are you getting back on the degree?
Metrics are not based on wealth but value add.
External measurements (72 cents per student) the difference is much bigger than millionaires donating to NYU.
Deficiency vs. Abundance modeling. An abundance of things that don't have to be about how much money a place does or doesn't have. Abundance of really interesting students who want to do things. How do they become our forced multiplier?
Technology can apply a massive bounty, but it also increases the spread. SUNY county can increase the bounty but shrink the spread because it gives students opportunity to have access to that.

Role of the Provost
-
Semiotic
Provost gets to construct the meaning of things. Although it seems abstract, it is and it isn't.
What does a SUNY Canton educational experience get to mean? Provost helps to shape this in the same way students help shape what this place gets to be like.

THEN students get to work together to create a different reality for what they want that reality to be.
Only communication theory. Only works when it goes both ways. Only works when both parties are co-creating the language/reality.
