Unit 5: How Effective was the U.S containing communism spread
Korea
Truman realised the USA was in a competition for world dmination with the USSR. By supporting South Korea, Aerica was able to fight Communism without directly attacking Russia.
Truman believed that, if one country fell to Communism, then others would follow, like a line of dominoes. He was worried that, if Korea fell, the Communists would capture Japan.
In 1945, Korea was freed from the Japanese. US troops stayed in Korea until 1946. The country was split in half at the 38th parallel
North Korea (led by Kim Il Sung) was Communist.
Kim Il Sung visited Stalin
In 1949, he persuaded Stalin that he could conquer South Korea. Stalin did not think that America would dare to get involved, so he gave his agreement.
Stalin saw a chance to continue the cold war and discomfort America, but ‘at arm’s length’ – without directly confronting the Americans. Kim Il Sung also went to see Mao Zedong, the leader of China, to get his agreement.
South Korea (led by Syngman Rhee) was capitalist.
In 1950, Syngman Rhee boasted that he was going to attack North Korea. It was a good enough excuse – the North Koreans invaded South Korea.
Cuba
In the 1950’s Cuba was ruled by a capitalist dictator, General Fulgencio Batista, who was supported by the United States.
Fidel Castro started a revolution against Batista and quickly won the support of Cuba’s poor communitie
Castro overthrew Batista and brought Communism to Cuba.
The United States responded with an embargo (stopping trade) and with a failed invasion at the Bay of Pigs.
The USSR bought Cuban products to help their economy, but later they would give Cuba military equipment, including Nuclear Missiles.

Vietnam
The country of Vietnam had been a colony of the French since the 1880’s.
he Japanese took over the country of Vietnam during WWII.
When the Japanese lost WWII, the French came back and took over Vietnam again.
Ho Chi Minh, winning the war, the U.S. decided to stay in Vietnam and fight the spread of Communism.
The U.S. fought along with the South Vietnamese whose leader was a U.S. puppet, Ngo Dinh Diem.
Later on the us gave up and left
