Section 5 : Ballad style
L1 Basic ballad
LH root, fifth, root with pedal // RH pentatonic scale
-
-
L4 Adding RH notes
LH root, fifth, rooth, RH plays two notes on top then LH play all the same notes again but going down
L7
-
same notes but add different rhythm by changing the notes duration with quarter notes or 1/2 notes for example
adding passing notes, going up to 1 octave from the first note
adding double notes on the RH, (play the 3rd, 6th and 1 octave) within the same key (e.g C major therefore all white keys) direction just go one octave up then come back down
-
L6
can do the ones from L4 but also add any notes from the chord played in LH, plus 2nd note
-
-
L8
mix it all up : runs, 3rd 6th and octave, safe notes, varying the rhythm and free style
L9
do the style in L4 but do this for Am, Dm, Am, B dim & E9 do this two times round then only play the LH and RH notes up to the 2nd and change chords for 2 times round again
Improvising when improvising over A minor, try to find notes that sounds discordant & avoid playing those, everything else is fine. // chords with # include the # notes in your improvisation, the major chords just play any white keys
-
L11
using L4's style again practicing with Dm, C, B flat, last one (weird LH A, RH G diminished until 1 octave higher) then back to D minor
Improvising Remember like in L9 Improvising, the 1,3,5 and 2 is a given, but try to experiment all of the other notes within the scale and see what is discordant and avoid that. (this rule applies to all other chords every chord that will be 1 or 2 notes that wont work and sound dischordant) (P.S Bflat is the chord that La Vie En Rose starts with) // use the bongo pattern towards the end // change up the octaves here and there when you improvise // put in the block chords in RH
L12
- LH play the chord notes in structured basic ballad style in L3 (root, fifth, root, fifth)
- RH plays the normal melody line
3. Getting thick sound add a chord each time the chord comes in underneath the melody line (use inversions to make it easy) while LH still plays structured basic ballad style L3 (root, fifth, root, fifth)
sometimes the chords and the melody line played in the RH might clash (seems like from the vid that u need to omit the sounds that would clash with the melody line, therefore the note from the melody line must be there)
L13 Scarborough
-
when the melody lines is empty extend notes from the chords using passing notes to get to the next chord // running bass down
L14
some LH chords will be shortened to just root & fifth // take note of chords played in diff. inversions
