Stereotyping

Religion in comedy

Judaism

Family guy

Father ted

Jews are depicted as lawyers, good with money

Long hair

Rich

Big noses

Nazis

Talking about the holocaust

I think that this went almost too far

Catholicism

Family guy

The nuns are depicted as aggressive

Nuns carry rulers

They're very strict

Father ted

Women are aggressive and determined and very strict

People follow the priests like sheep, they do whatever they say

Church of England

The Vicar of Dibley

Old, nobody goes

They don't really want change

Don't want their new vicar to be a woman

What is unacceptable in comedy?

Killed Jesus

Not good as manual labour

Targeted events

The holocaust (and any other genocides)

9/11 (and any other terrorist attacks)

Not funny because it was an attack on just the Jews, discriminating one religious group

Not funny because it was a terrorist attack. Because of terrorist groups like al-Qaeda, many Muslims have been/are stereotyped as terrorists for many years to come

Racism in the media

Family guy

The family guy episode 'When You Wish Upon a Weinstein' explored stereotypes of Jews, potentially upsetting them

The episode didn't air at first after post-production because executives were worried that it could be seen as anti-Semitic

The episode did eventually air

I think it's okay because it mainly explores positive stereotypes of Jews, and doesn't take it too far

Taking it too far

Repeatedly showing or encouraging negative stereotypes about a certain group

I think that as long as it is mainly funny, and not mean towards a group of people, then it is usually okay
